Learn English with Seinfeld In this section, we analyze parts of the TV show script to learn and understand the use of daily English language.

Read the passages and try to understand them. Then, read the vocabulary explanation. Finally, read the passage again.

 

Elaine: You know, it's not fair people are seated 'first-come, first-served'. It should be based on who's hungriest. I feel like just going over there and taking some food off somebody's plate.
Jerry: I'll tell you what: There's 50 bucks in it for you if you do it.
Elaine: What do you mean?
Jerry: You walk over that table, you pick up an eggroll, you don't say anything, you eat it, say 'thank you very much', wipe your mouth, walk away, I give you 50 bucks.
George: What are they gonna do?
Jerry: They won't do anything; in fact, you'll be giving them a story to tell for the rest of their lives.

Jerry: Can we just go in already?
George: What are we gonna tell her?
Elaine: I'll tell her I was the one who laughed.
George: No, don't say a word. If she thinks my friends are jerks, then I'm a jerk...
Elaine: [To Jerry] Oh, remind me to talk to you about something later.
Jerry: What about?
George: Hey, hey! We're discussing something!
Jerry: I know, but I'm distracted now.
George: What are you? A baby? All right. Tell her.

What... for? ¿Para qué...? Note que en este tipo de preguntas se comienza con What, se sigue la oración y recién al final se agrega for.
in the first place en primer lugar

How could I know she would start to laugh? Cómo podría saber que ella comenzaría a reírse? Note el uso de los auxiliares could y would. Para aprender diferentes formas de reírse, vea Ways of laughing.
to go in entrar. El opuesto es to go out, salir.
gonna Forma coloquial de decir going to
to tell somebody something decir algo a alguien. Otra forma de usar este verbo es to tell something to somebody. Para aprender a usar este verbo sin confundirlo con otros parecidos, vea speak, talk, say or tell?
don't say a word no digas ni una palabra
jerk imbécil
to remind somebody to do something recordar a alguien hacer algo. También puede decirse to remind somebody of something.
What... about? ¿Sobre qué...? Note que en este tipo de preguntas se comienza con What, se sigue la oración y recién al final se agrega about. Por ejemplo, What is this book about?
to discuss hablar. Note que este verbo no implica violencia ni peleas, sino que se trata más bien de intercambiar opiniones, debatir.
