In this section, we analyze parts of the TV show script to learn and understand the use of daily English language.

Read the passages and try to understand them. Then, read the vocabulary explanation. Finally, read the passage again.

From the episode 'Oops'

Niles: This has been kind of fun, ah, but I really have to go. I'm conducting a seminar on multiple personality disorders, and it takes me forever to fill out the name tags.
Frasier: Well, KACL team, what is on the agenda for today?
Roz: Sit down and listen to this. I got a juicy piece of news, and it's reliable. Alan in accounting got it from Steven in promotions, who got it from Sindy in retail sales, who got it from Arlene, the station managers secretary, that the station is definitely way over budget, and somebody's getting the axe. But don't tell anybody, I was sworn to secrecy.

kind of fun	un poco divertido. La expresión kind of se utiliza para indicar "algo, bastante, un poco, etc." Por ejemplo, it's kind of difficult sería "bastante difícil", that kind of things sería equivalente a "cosas por el estilo".
to conduct a seminar	dar un seminario
a seminar on something	un seminario sobre/acerca de algo. Note el uso de la preposición on.
to fill out	completar
agenda	orden del día. No se debe traducir como "agenda", que en inglés se dice diary. A este tipo de palabras que se confunden fácilmente se las llama cognados o false friends. Para más ejemplos, vea la sección False Friends.
a piece of news	una noticia. Como news es un sustantivo incontable, para formar el singular es necesario utilizar esta forma. Lo mismo sucede con otros sustantivos como a piece of furniture, a flash of lightning, etc.
reliable	fiable, fidedigno/a
to be way over something	estar sobrepasado en algo
to get the axe	ser despedido
to swear somebody to secrecy	hacer que alguien jure guardar un secreto. En este caso, está usado en forma pasiva I was sworn to secrecy, que sería "Me hicieron jurar que guarde el secreto".

Frasier: Oh people, people. You're jumping to conclusions. Show a little respect. Bulldog has devoted 15 years of his life to radio. My own personal feelings aside, the man deserves better than to become the object of some scurrilous rumour that yet hasn't a shred of truth to it.
Roz: Yeah. I suppose you're right.

to jump to conclusions	llegar a conclusiones precipitadas
to show respect	mostrar respeto
to devote (exp. of time) to something	dedicar (exp. de tiempo) a algo. Por ejemplo, to devote 15 years of his life to radio sería "dedicar 15 años de su vida a la radio".
to deserve better than	merecer algo mejor que
scurrilous	difamatorio
not a shred of truth	ni una pizca de verdad, ni un poquito de verdad

Daphne: You actually think you're responsible for Bulldog losing his job.
Frasier: All right, all right. Ahh, there was a rumour going round the station that Bulldog was going to get sacked, and then.. I was repeating it to someone and he overheard me and flew off the handle, went up and quit his job. In the end it turned out that the rumour wasn't true.

to be responsible for something	ser responsable de algo. Note el uso de la preposición for.
a rumour going round	un rumor dando vueltas
to get sacked	ser despedido
to overhear somebody	oír a alguien por casualidad, sin querer
to fly off the handle	perder los estribos
to quit a job	dejar un trabajo
