Ballot
This word was first used around 1540. It comes from the Italian word pallotte, which is the diminutive form of palla (meaning ball). During that time, small balls were used by voters to choose a candidate. Nowadays, it refers to the sheet of paper on which a voter marks his vote, or the printed sheet of paper with the names of the candidates.
Esta palabra fue utilizada por primera vez alrededor del 1540. Proviene de la palabra italiana pallotte, que es la forma diminutiva de palla (que significa bola). Durante esa época, los votantes usaban pequeñas bolillas para elegir a un candidato.
